ProFoss™ for whole grain

Making optimal use of grain for milling

ProFoss for Whole Grain is a process analysis and control solution that measures moisture and protein in entire batches of whole grain as they arrive at the flour mill. This allows the perfect blend of grain for consistent quality products downstream in the milling process. It also helps to improve the tempering process by allowing the right timing, use of energy and water according to the exact nature of the grain.

NIR technology

Safe and non-destructive NIR technology

ProFoss™ employs a near infrared-based analysis technology known as high resolution diode array analysis. This provides accurate and continuous results and, if required, remote support and maintenance via the internet is also available.

The ProFoss™ analyser is available with dedicated interfaces based on reflectance or transmittance technology, whichever is best suited for each application area.

Measurements are done directly on the moving sample in the process stream. A high-intensity dual-lamp light source illuminates the sample directly or through an optical fibre. The light interacts with the sample and the reflected or transmitted light is measured by the diode array sensor. The backup lamp in the dual lamp system secures uptime and analytical accuracy is unchanged even after switching to a new lamp.

The complete wavelength range is measured instantaneously enabling measurements to be accurately carried out even on fast moving sample. Calibrations are transferable between units ensuring easy expansion to other measurement points. Integration to process regulations systems can be done through the FOSS OPC interface or through an analogue signal.

The next logical step - a comparison with benchtop analysis

How does inline control compare with benchtop analysis

The ProFoss system is based on near infrared analysis – a technology that is already widely used for periodic testing of grain deliveries. The ProFoss takes the concept a logical step further by measuring entire batches of grain.  A specially designed sample interface intercepts the grain as it is conveyed in a pipe or transport system and feeds a continuous stream of analysis data back to a computer in your control room.

An obvious consideration is whether the accuracy of measurements with the ProFoss are comparable to existing bench top analysers used in the laboratory.

A user study based on ProFoss for flour milling indicates very similar performance for both solutions.

But even though the performances of the two solutions are very similar, the frequency of measurement with the ProFoss system allows trends and irregularities to be spotted more quickly.

The ProFoss can also help to spot smaller variations in the process, as shown in the trend chart. This is because using a bench top instrument to check a process is subject to the risk of operator error. Mistakes can lead to a wrong measurement result and if this is used for process adjustment,

This can continue until the next sample is analysed perhaps one or two hours later. So, although the performance of NIR laboratory instruments is traditionally determined by the standard error of prediction (SEP), in real life, the performance is limited by a combination of sampling errors, sample preparation
errors and analytical errors.

In contrast, ProFoss takes direct measurements inside the process. Sampling errors and sample preparation errors can therefore be minimised to almost zero. Monitoring process variations using a trend chart and a moving average function enables the detection of process variations of a laboratory analyser. Even if one result is wrong for some reason, this has no new result will be generated few seconds later.

RINA

Monitoring and support via the internet

The RINA software suite supports ProFoss Feed and other FOSS NIR instruments. This internet-based network connects individual instruments to a control centre where NIR experts remotely monitor and perform management tasks allowing the local user to carry out routine analysis operations without having to worry about instrument performance or reliability of results.

Quick and simple to implement

The high resolution technology used in the ProFoss system ensures complete accuracy across multiple instruments without any drift. Once calibrated there is no need for constant adjustments saving you time and money on installing individual analysers.

Continous monitoring, immediate results

A ProFoss™ in-line solution gives you continuous results so you can make any adjustments immediately. Even seemingly minor adjustments can lead to significantly increased yield and revenue through a better use of valuable raw material.
